How to Fix macOS Login Keychain Sync Issues After Password Change
Applicable OS: macOS 13 (Ventura) and later
Overview
On macOS, your account password and your "login keychain" password must match. The keychain is an encrypted container storing your saved passwords for Wi-Fi, websites, and apps like Outlook or Slack.
When your network password (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Active Directory) is changed, your Mac's local account password usually updates automatically. However, the keychain password does not update automatically, causing them to fall out of sync.
This results in persistent pop-up dialogs asking for your keychain password or an error message upon login.
Symptoms
After changing your password, you encounter one of the following:
Persistent Pop-ups: Multiple apps (Chrome, Outlook, "accountsd", "com.apple.iCloudHelper") repeatedly ask for your keychain password.
The "Unable to Unlock" Dialog: Immediately after logging in, you see a system dialog box:
"The system was unable to unlock your login keychain."
Solution 1: The "Update Keychain Password" Prompt (Recommended)
If you see the dialog box described above right after logging in, this is the easiest fix. You must know your OLD password.
When the prompt appears, click the default blue button labeled Update Keychain Password.
You will be prompted to enter a password. Enter your OLD password (the one you used before the change).
macOS will use your old password to unlock the keychain, then immediately re-encrypt it using your current (new) login password.
The issue is resolved.
Warning: Do NOT click "Create New Keychain" unless you have forgotten your old password. This option deletes all your saved passwords, Wi-Fi keys, and browser credentials.
Solution 2: Manual Re-sync via Keychain Access App
If you dismissed the prompt or didn't see it, you can manually resync the passwords. You need your current password and your old password.
Open Finder, navigate to Applications > Utilities, and launch Keychain Access. (Or search for it via Spotlight with
Cmd + Space). In the left sidebar, under "Default Keychains," right-click on "login".
Select Change Password for Keychain "login"...
A series of prompts will appear:
Prompt 1 (Current Password): Enter your OLD password to unlock the keychain. Click OK.
Prompt 2 (New Password): Enter your NEW (current) Mac login password in both fields. Click OK.
Your keychain is now re-encrypted with your current password.
Solution 3: The "Nuclear Option" (If Old Password is Forgotten)
If you do not know your old password, you cannot recover the data inside the old keychain. You must delete it and create a fresh one. You will need to re-enter passwords for websites and apps as you use them.
Open the Keychain Access app.
Go to the top menu bar: Keychain Access > Settings... (or Preferences... on older macOS).
Click the button labeled Reset Default Keychains...
Enter your current Mac login password to confirm.
Restart your Mac. Upon the next login, macOS will automatically create a brand new, empty "login" keychain encrypted with your current password.
For JumpCloud Users
If your Mac is managed by NetNXT via JumpCloud, the JumpCloud Menu Bar App can often prevent this issue.
Always change your password through the JumpCloud Mac App (if available) or the JumpCloud User Portal.
After changing your password in the portal, click the JumpCloud icon in your Mac menu bar and select "Sync Password" or "Update Password" to ensure the changes propagate to your local account and keychain correctly.
FAQ
1) Why does macOS keep asking for my keychain password?
This happens when your login password changes but the keychain password does not update, causing them to fall out of sync and trigger repeated authentication prompts.
2) What is the easiest way to fix a login keychain password issue?
If prompted after login, clicking “Update Keychain Password” and entering your old password allows macOS to re-encrypt the keychain using your current login password.
3) What should I do if I forgot my old keychain password?
If the old password is unavailable, you must reset the default keychain, which deletes stored credentials and creates a new empty keychain encrypted with your current password.
4) How can JumpCloud users prevent keychain password issues?
JumpCloud-managed users should change passwords via the JumpCloud app or portal and use the menu bar option to sync passwords, ensuring proper propagation to the local keychain.
