Pick by operating model, not feature list. CrowdStrike for a staffed SOC. SentinelOne for mixed estates and offline sites. Defender if you already hold Microsoft 365 E5 and run Windows.
Most Indian enterprises are comparing the wrong thing.
All three platforms detect ransomware. All three are Gartner-recognised. The engine is rarely what fails you.
What fails you is simpler. How long your telemetry is kept. Whether it sits in India. And who acts on an alert at 3 a.m.
On that basis:
CrowdStrike Falcon fits organisations with a staffed SOC and budget for premium threat intelligence.
SentinelOne Singularity fits mixed estates, sites on weak links, and teams that need India-resident data today.
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint wins on cost if you already hold Microsoft 365 E5 and your estate is mostly Windows.
There is one trap common to all three. None ships CERT-In's 180-day retention as standard. Almost no comparison article mentions it.
First, a correction: the MITRE numbers are not comparable
You are probably looking at a table citing MITRE scores for all three vendors. Those numbers come from different tests.
MITRE published its 2025 Enterprise results on 11 December 2025. The round emulated Scattered Spider and Mustang Panda. It was the first to include cloud infrastructure.
Eleven vendors took part. CrowdStrike was one of them.
Microsoft, SentinelOne and Palo Alto Networks all withdrew. Microsoft announced in June 2025. SentinelOne and Palo Alto both announced in September 2025. All cited roadmap and resource priorities.
So here is where each vendor actually stands:
CrowdStrike — tested in 2025. Reports 100% detection and protection.
SentinelOne — last Enterprise result is 2024. Reported 100% detection with 88% fewer alerts than the median.
Microsoft — not tested in an Enterprise round since 2023.
Any table that lines these up as peers is comparing three different exams from three different years.
Treat vendor MITRE claims as evidence of investment, not as a scoreboard. MITRE itself states the evaluations do not rank vendors. If detection is genuinely your deciding factor, run a proof of concept on your own estate.

The question Indian buyers should ask first
CERT-In requires covered entities to report specified incidents within 6 hours. It also requires ICT logs to be kept for a rolling 180 days, within Indian jurisdiction.
Now compare what the platforms actually ship:
SentinelOne Complete — 14 days.
SentinelOne Commercial — 90 days.
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint — 180 days in the portal. But advanced hunting, which is what analysts actually query, is 30 days.
CrowdStrike Falcon — depends on the bundle and the retention module you buy.
No standard tier gets you a defensible 180 days of queryable telemetry.
You close the gap by buying a longer-retention SKU, a data lake, or a SIEM layer. Or by using a provider who includes it.
This is the most common costing error on Indian EDR deals. A CIO signs off a per-endpoint number. Six weeks later, the retention needed to answer a regulator costs extra.
Build it into the comparison on day one.
The 6-hour clock works the same way. A licence does not report an incident. A person does. If nobody is contractually accountable for filing within six hours, the tool has not made you compliant. It has only made you better instrumented.

Data residency in 2026
Residency moved fast this year. Older comparison articles have not caught up.
SentinelOne has the longest India presence. It launched a virtual data centre on an AWS Mumbai point of presence in July 2023, storing logs and security data in-country. For a board that has already committed to localisation, this is settled ground.
CrowdStrike announced regional clouds for India, Saudi Arabia and the UAE on 20 January 2026. The programme extends in-country deployment while keeping customers connected to global telemetry.
At announcement, these were described as planned. If residency is a hard requirement, get written confirmation of current availability, module coverage and the migration path for an existing tenant.
Microsoft supports India as a storage geography for Defender for Endpoint. The list also includes the EU, UK, US, Australia, Switzerland and the UAE.
One catch matters here. Storage location is set at tenant provisioning. If your tenant was created years ago in another geo, you cannot change it by ticking a box. Check where your tenant actually sits.
A caution worth stating plainly. Residency is about where data rests. It does not answer who can access it, or under whose legal process. If your board asked about sovereignty rather than residency, that is a contractual review, not a datasheet check.
SentinelOne Singularity
Best for: Mixed Windows, macOS and Linux estates. Manufacturing, retail and logistics with sites on thin links. Teams that need India-resident data now.
How it behaves. Detection and response run on the agent, not in the cloud. A plant with a flaky MPLS link still detects, still kills the process, still rolls back. That is the difference between a contained incident and a Monday morning discovery.
One-click ransomware rollback on Windows is the feature most Indian buyers evaluate it for. It works. It is also not magic. It restores what the agent tracked, on supported Windows builds. It does not replace backups. Test it on your own file servers first.
What to validate. Which retention tier you are buying. Whether Purple AI, Identity Detection and Response and the Data Lake are in your quote or adjacent to it. Rollback behaviour on your OS builds. That the India PoP is contractually specified.

CrowdStrike Falcon
Best for: Organisations with a staffed internal SOC. Global enterprises needing consistent tooling. Programmes where attribution changes decisions.
How it behaves. The sensor is light. Analytics sit in the cloud. Endpoint overhead stays low and fleet-wide hunting is fast.
There is a corollary. Capability drops when an endpoint disconnects. For a fully connected estate, this is a non-issue. For twenty branches on consumer broadband, weigh it seriously.
CrowdStrike's intelligence is the strongest of the three. Its 2026 Global Threat Report, published 24 February 2026, put average eCrime breakout time at 29 minutes. That is 65% faster than 2024. The fastest observed was 27 seconds. AI-enabled adversary operations rose 89% year on year.
Those numbers explain why "who watches this at 2 a.m." matters more than the engine comparison.
What to validate. Exactly which modules are in your bundle, because Falcon is heavily modular. Whether Falcon Flex fits your consumption pattern. India cloud availability for your tenant. Retention, separately.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
Best for: Organisations already on Microsoft 365 E5, with a Windows-dominant, Entra-joined estate.
How it behaves. Defender's real advantage is not the engine. It is correlation.
Endpoint signal, Entra sign-in risk, Exchange mail flow and SharePoint activity land in one investigation graph. For a business email compromise that pivots to an endpoint, nothing assembles the story faster.
The economics are hard to argue with. If Plan 2 already sits unused inside a licence you have paid for, deploying anything else needs a real justification.
What to validate. Your licensing position, precisely. Plan 1 and Plan 2 differ substantially, and Plan 2 is what gives you EDR. Microsoft does not publish standalone P1 and P2 pricing on its product page. The Defender Suite is listed at ₹1,000 per user per month in India and requires Microsoft 365 E3, or Office 365 E3 with EMS E3. Confirm your tenant's storage geo. Then confirm the 30-day hunting window against your investigation needs.

When Defender beats a third-party platform. If you are E5-licensed, 95% Windows, and your security team is two people who live in the Microsoft portal, a second vendor buys complexity more than protection. Spend on tuning and 24×7 coverage instead.
How we evaluated
Five factors, in the order they cause problems in Indian deployments:
Regulatory fit — CERT-In reporting and retention, DPDP, plus RBI and SEBI CSCRF overlays.
Data residency — verified in-country storage, available now or announced.
Real total cost — licence plus retention, modules and managed coverage.
Estate fit — OS mix, site connectivity, existing identity platform.
Detection efficacy — from the most recent comparable testing, with testing years stated.
Detection comes last for a reason. At this tier it is least likely to change the outcome. All three catch commodity ransomware.
What separates a contained incident from a reportable breach is whether someone responded in minutes, and whether you can prove what happened six months later.
What this costs an Indian enterprise
Model four components, not one:
Platform licence — per endpoint per year, at your negotiated tier, not list.
Retention to 180 days — a longer-retention SKU, data lake or external log platform. Often 20–40% on top of the licence.
24×7 coverage — internal headcount or a managed XDR service. An India-staffed in-house SOC runs to roughly ₹1.5 crore and upward per year once you count three shifts, tooling and attrition. That is an approximation and varies with scope.
Deployment and tuning — the first ninety days, where detection value is realised or lost.

A decision framework for one meeting
Work down the list. Stop at the first clear answer.
On Microsoft 365 E5, with a Windows estate above roughly 90%? Start with Defender Plan 2. Prove it insufficient before spending elsewhere.
Is India residency a hard requirement this quarter? SentinelOne has the longest-established presence. Verify CrowdStrike's availability before assuming parity.
Sites on unreliable connectivity? Favour on-agent detection. SentinelOne fits better.
Running a mature internal SOC with intel analysts? CrowdStrike rewards that investment most.
Materially non-Windows estate? Rule out Defender as the primary platform.
In every case: who acts at 3 a.m., and can you produce 180 days of logs on request? If either answer is uncertain, fix that first. It matters more than the platform.
The trend to plan for
Detection quality is converging. All three now ship agentic AI into the analyst workflow. The gap between top-tier engines keeps narrowing.
With breakout time at 29 minutes, the bottleneck has moved from detection to response. A platform that flags an intrusion at 02:14 and a human who reads it at 09:30 is not a security programme, whatever the logo on the console.
Two forces will shape Indian buying over the next eighteen months. DPDP enforcement milestones through 2026 and 2027 turn log retention into legal exposure. And sovereignty expectations are rising faster than vendor infrastructure can follow, which is exactly why those regional cloud announcements landed when they did.
